Cllr Mike Chambers, having been associated with Ripon for over 40 yrs, has lived permanently in the City since 1993. He served in the Royal Air Force for a total of 35 years, retiring in the rank of Squadron Leader in 2001. He then took up the appointment of Unit Welfare Officer with 38 Engineer Regiment and subsequently 21 Engineer Regiment providing support and care to soldiers and their families. He retired from this appointment in March 2012.
In 2001 he was appointed a MBE, in recognition of his meritorious RAF service, his contribution as a volunteer of 12 years standing, with the North Yorkshire Victim Support Scheme (Harrogate and District) and his efforts in support of the Ripon and District Royal Air Forces Association. He met his wife Kate, a Riponian, in 1968. Married in 1970, they have 2 children and 2 grandchildren.
A strong supporter of our beautiful city and its community, Mike is a Governor of Ripon Grammar School and the Cathedral Primary School. He has, over a number of years, been involved in support of the Ripon Festival Committee in facilitating such events as the Ripon Week-end and latterly the re-introduction of the ‘Pancake Day’ races. He is also the President of the Ripon & District Royal Air Forces Association. Currently an elected member of Harrogate District Council, representing Ripon Spa Ward, he holds a portfolio as Cabinet member for Housing.

My commitment to both individual, our fine city and the district as a whole, remains a strong as ever and I pledge to continue to give 100% effort in serving anyway I can in advancing the profile and prosperity of this most beautiful area of North Yorkshire.”
Cllr Chambers was elected to the office of Deputy Mayor on 6 May 2014.
